SPA073: Turn Your Inner Critic into the Voice of Victory

Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning. – Mahatma Gandhi

We all know we are our own best and worst critic, and the greatest enemy is in fact ourselves.

It’s just so typical isn’t it? How many games have you been competing and time again, this little voice of yours must be there to draw all sorts of personal references, judgements and biases. Sometimes you can clearly see it as disturbing you, but there are times when it’s are so subtle, you actually follow it without knowing it’s affecting your performance in a negative way.

What I want you to do today either on your own or with your team, is to find a quiet spot that doesn’t invite any form of distraction, get seated with a pen and plain sheet of paper each to do the following exercises:

  1. First step back and see yourself from a 3rd person point of view.
  2. Next, Leave your door open.
  3. List all the possible reasons you can think of on why you CAN.
  4. After you’ve got your list down on the paper, pay attention to what you have written.
  5. It’s not abnormal, it’s hard because we have millions and trillions of thoughts. The next best thing to do is to get the facts.
  6. Try a little kindness.
