SPA 021: The 20 Most Dangerous Myths About Peak Performance

Peak performance in life isn’t about succeeding all the time or even being happy all the time. It’s often about compensating, adjusting, and doing the best you can with what you have right now.– Ken Ravizza

I believe if you want to be at your best, you need to put in the work with strategies formulated towards your success. It’s not just merely slogging and grinding all day. So the formula for excellence and success if very straight forward, that is Work + Strategy + Resilience = Success!

I mentioned this to a couple of athletes recently and they returned with many questions and sort of complicated the simple process to victory.

So today, I thought it’s best we address a whole lot of myths and bust them now, better earlier than later.

The following list of myths and tips are pulled out of an article done by Bill Cole of the Mental Game Association. I found it particularly useful to address some of the questions many of you may need answers to, because in order to improve your performance abilities, you need to know, understand, recognize and be able to avoid the myths surrounding performance.

Top performers are so fine-tuned in their disciplines that they have seen all the traps, pitfalls and blind alleys about performing, and have devised methods to overcome them to be able to sustain high levels of performance under all adverse conditions. We call these people peak performers.

Why are these myths dangerous? If you don’t handle them, they will creep into your performances and sabotage you. And you may not even know what’s happening.

The secret lies in having powerful, tested mental game peak performance strategies at your disposal. What your mind believes you will achieve. As I mentioned before, we aren’t able to see what Roger Federer or Kobe Bryant is thinking, but it’s not all physical, they have something stirring in their heads, figuring out the game, using self-talk to boost their confidence, strategising and creating steps towards their goals every step of the way.

Lionel Messi couldn’t do what he always does at the 2014 World Cup. Who knows what he was thinking while playing the final match. We know him as the UEFA Champions League super scorer and playmaker, but what makes him tick every season and why he couldn’t repeat the same performance at the World Cup?

Before we go to such a level, let’s learn some myths and dispel them forever.
