“Never respond to an angry person with a fiery comeback, even if he deserves it…Don’t allow his anger to become your anger.” – Bohdi Sanders
The simplest strategy when it comes to coping with emotion to boost your performance is actually through proper breathing techniques.
I remember back in my University days, I used to go for long runs with a few friends and was one of the slowest around. So, this friend of mine will always spur me on to go faster than my usual speed to push me harder so that I can improve.
But I always fall short because I get stitches almost every time I run too fast in too short a time. A very good technique that he taught me was to take 2 quick breaths in and 2 quick breaths out.
You know how we usually breathe is by breathing in once and then immediately breathe out once, than in again? This time I learned to do so twice in and twice out.
Guess what? After just a few sets of that, my stitches completely disappeared! At that time I felt it was amazing because I never knew how to get rid of stitches in the middle of a run besides slowing down or stopping.
Of course through more experiences after that I finally learned to cope with that through proper warmups and stretches.
Maybe this is not new to you but thought I share that snippet anyway to show how breathing is so important into helping us pull through pain and bad times (hopefully I put it the right way).
How about you? Have you faced any situation whereby a certain breathing technique got you to perform more efficiently?
